In West Philadelphia born and raised…

who family

You know you want to complete that sentence. For the most part, when someone hears that sline, they have the undeniable urge to finish it off with “On the playground where I spent most of my days…”. Or at least I know I do. If you do recognize these lyrics, then you were definitely a fan of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It was THE show of the 90’s and in my opinion, still one of the best comedy series to have aired til this day. You know how sometimes you catch an episode of a show you once found hilarious and you realize “huh…it isn’t that funny”? Well this never happens with Fresh Prince. It is still funny til this day because Will Smith and the whole gang brought us a countless number of timeless jokes.

Since it was a show from the 90’s you can imagine the style is a tad….outdated. However, that does not mean we cannot still admire the flashy and colorful outfits sported by our favorite characters. This post can technically go on forever, however, to narrow it down to a realistic length, I have decided to focus on the two most fashion oriented characters of the series: Will Smith and Miss Hilary Banks. Today Will be the main focus with his colorful and expressive attire.

Will school uniform 3

When Will got to Bel-Air Academy and realized he had to wear a uniform that screamed out boring, he decided to spice things up and turn the school jacket inside out for the lining to appear. Caught the attention of quite a few classmates. He showed us that sometimes even if you are “supposed” to wear something a certain way, doesn’t mean you can’t make it your own.

Will Smith as

One thing Will did not shy away from is colors. Would you be caught dead wearing this on any other day than Halloween in today? Hell no. But at the time, did Will look bad ass sporting this outfit? Hell yes.

Will 1

Will was the definition of goofy (although he hated when his girl Lisa described him as that), but when he dressed up, he was as debonair as they come. He proves why a man looks so sophisticated in a suit.

Will 5

Speaking of men in suits, have you ever seen anyone else wear a cummerbund on their chest? Also Will may have started the look of wearing a blazer with a casual shirt from under. Sure one normally wouldn’t wear a beach tank top under a suit jacket, but no one can disgree that it is different.

will jean jacket

As the years went by, Will’s style matured and became more manly. He often wore a t-shirt under an open long sleeve shirt which is a casual syle many can sport today.

Will 4

Will was no stranger to fluorescent colors and that is definitely one thing that has taken the fashion world by storm in the last few yrs. From tops to pants to nail color, highlighter shades is the way to go and Will’s old school zip up jacket demonstrates why.

Will has had his ups and down, and his style has changed throughout the seasons, but one thing is for sure, he tried to make the best of any situation, but it was proven to be extremely difficult when he was stuck in a basement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kNUDTyEgj4). I wouldn’t normally put hair extensions on the top of my head, but the patterned suspenders are definitely unique.

Stay tuned for Wednesday’s post on Hilary Banks’ very posh and sophisticated style review.

Witchy Woman. Part 2.

 BewitchedWallpaper

Halloween is tomorrow and if you have yet to figure out your costu me, why not go for the all-time classic witch? I know what you are thinking: Boring! Wrong. Being a witch is anything but boring because you don’t have to be just some regular witch, but get inspired by one of many inspirational witches that have graced (or frightened) our small and big screens. Some are obviously more realitic as a Halloween costume because of their distinct look, but no matter. And don’t let your persona of the typical witch fool you. Long gone are the days of big curvy noses, warts and pointy hats. Although that look is still great for the costume, most witches portrayed in movies and tv shows today look nothing of the such! Time to keep on looking at some of the awesome witches we have met over the years from movie and tv shows.

sisters-season-3-charmed-28554542-640-480

I remember when Charmed first came out I wished I was a witch and that my name started with a P. Modern, beautiful girls with each having an individual power. Definitely didn’t lead boring lives!

susan-sarandon-as-evil-queen

As modern day witches go, the evil Queen Narissa (played by Susan Sarandon) from Enchanted wasn’t so modern. Her look reminds me of a real life version of the evil witch Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty. Regardless, it’s an awesome get up and screams witchcraft (and that is some beautifully done makeup!).

Growing Pains

Vampire Diaries is in my opinion one of the most exciting shows on tv today. Not only are the men beautiful to look at but the storyline is amazing. Although it first started with only vampires, warewolves and witches have taken over and one of the main and most powerful ones is Bonnie Bonnett (played by Kat Graham). Although not a favorite character of mine, even I can admit she’s pretty bad ass.

Michelle Williams as Glinda the Good Witch in Oz The Great and Powerful

Glenda The Good Witch is the perfect example that not all witches are scary looking. In the film “The Great and Powerful Oz” that was a huge hit last year in the box office, Michelle Williams portrayed this character beautifully. It is a great Halloween costume for she is dressed all in white and has blond hair.

Hocus-Pocus

To finish off, I thought it was only right to talk about my all-time favorite witches: Mary, Winifred and Sarah (played by Kathy Najimy, Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker). These sisters scared the bejeezus of the people of Salem years ago. Not only is it a great movie, but it is the perfect Halloween ritual! Dress up and watch Hocus Pocus! You definitely won’t regret it. 20 years later and these sisters are still my favorite witches! I have always wanted to dress up with 2 of my friends and be these witches for Halloween. Maybe one year!

Witches may be all sorts of colors and have different kind of personalities, and styles, but at the end of the day don’t forget they are people too. If Wicked taught us anything, is that witches are greatly misunderstood! All of these women I have talked about this week may have been born with magical powers, but their biggest power of all is no doubt their fierceness. Happy Halloween to all, and make sure to not get spooked!

Do you smell that? Cause I sure do. That’s right, it smells like Halloween. It’s a bit chilly, the leaves are falling and chocolat is constantly in or around my mouth. There’s something special about this holiday. For the most part I am always really into Halloween. I take my costumes very seirously. I try to be creative and either do something film or pop culture related. However the classic Halloween costumes are based on the goons or goblins from when we were young: vampires, zombies, mummies, monsters, ghosts and of course, witches. I for one have never dressed as a witch for Halloween but there is something cool about it. In my opinion, they’re simply bad-ass. I have always wished I can be a witch, or at least have some kind of powers. Not to mention, witches have come a long way from looking like this:

Margaret-Hamilton

The days of big pointy noses and warts are done for witches. They said, we are here and we want to look beautiful. From TV shows to movies, witches have been a prominent topic for the longest time. Whether they are good witches or evil, you can’t help but think they are cool. Unlike other supernatural beings (like vampires) a witch is born with her powers. But enough about the supernatural talk because I can go on all day on this topic! Hollywood has introduced us to many unforgettable witches that have enough personality and spunk that can last a lifetime. Sure some may not have much style, but there was definitely something about them. Let’s go down witchy memory lane and revisit some of my favorite past (and present) witches on the small and big screen.

Sabrina-Hart_320

Let’s start off with a girl that most late 20’s-early 30’s young adults know very well: Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Was she a bit annoying? Yes. Was she a bit dramatic? Yes. Did you make sure to stay in that Friday night to watch her? Yes (and don’t you dare try to deny it). Every young girl wish they had the power to zap a new outfit in mere seconds like Sabrina always did. Her style was cute and just what a teenage girl would wear. We all wish we could have her powers, have a cat like Salem and a crush like Harvey (sigh).

The-Craft-the-craft-22613575-1024-768

The Craft. If you haven’t watched it, definitely make sure you do. A film full of suspence, of 4 high school girls toying with magic. They made their school uniforms their own and each one had a different style. Kind of made me want to go to a private high school (until I did and realized that the movie lied to me and I could not change up my uniform as I see pleased). Still, they made witchcraft seem so cool and if you have watched it, I am sure you tried the spell “Light as a feather, stiff as a board” on one of your friends (or was that just my group of friends?).

If The Witches of Eastwick taught us anything is do NOT mess with a scorn woman. Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer lured us in and most importantly made us want to have big puffy out-of-control hair.????????????????????????????????????????

Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series is a modern day witch with exceptional talents and a fierce personality. She dresses just right for a girl her age. Sweaters and jeans are her go-to look when she’s not running around in her black cloak around Hogwarts hallways. This british beauty mustn’t be messed with for she will stupify you with a whisk of her wand!

mcgonagall

Although most people’s favorite is in fact Hermione, I am a HUGE Minerva Mcgonagall fan from the Harry Potter series. She is a stern professor but with a warm heart and the head of the Griffindor house, How can one not love her? (this is when my boyfriend would be making fun of my extensive knowledge and love of Harry Potter books/movies).

4126614547_d136335990

One of my all-time favorite movies (and my sister’s): Practical Magic. Sally and Gillian Owens (played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman) are sisters born from a long line of witches. Sounds great right? Wrong. Unfortunately for these beautiful women, any man to fall in love with an Owens woman is cursed to die an unfortunate and early death. The fashion of this film is absolutely great and I am bound to talk about it some other time as well. However let me just say for now the 2 things I learned from this movie is: there is almost nothing stronger than a sister’s bond, and really long hair is absolutely beautiful and definitely a good look for a witch.

If you are still unsure about your Halloween costume, inspire yourself from one of these powerful women. Or wait until Wednesday to see even more powerful witches from the past and present who have made quite the impact on our view of witches today!

Marilyn Monroe is Hollywood Glam. Part 2.

2462010992_9a7ba77fb6

Marilyn Monroe was a beautiful, free-spirited woman who seemed sure of who she was and what she wanted. A style icon and role model to many, she made sure her legacy would live on and remained an influential fashion idol to many (including me). Old Hollywood glamour is one of my favorite looks, especially for special events, and Marilyn did it best.

The women of that era knew how to look like put-together ladies and looking sloppy was never an option. Whether you were primmed and proper for a ball, or you were simply going out for supper, choosing the right and most flattering outfit was always a must. And most important, feeling good in your skin is what brought your outfit from nice to remarkable. Let’s take a look at the continuation of how Marilyn made her looks as memorable as they were.

MarilynOrange2

For those who say you can’t do orange for a fancy event, they clearly have’t seen Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, where Marilyn is wearing this stunning vibrant orange gown with diamond detailing.

The-Seven-Year-Itch-marilyn-monroe-14297522-700-541

One of my favorite Marilyn looks and a common outfit from that era is a matching shirt and pant combo with a belt sinched at the waist. It is professional, yet feminine all at once.

This stunning burgundy gown can be easily seen on the red carpet today. It’s strap detailing is something we don’t see often enough and I love the matching belt. This color is extremely flattering on blondes as well as brunettes.

Marilyn-Monroe-Seven-Year-Itch-The-marilyn-monroe-30820113-1069-1600

A couple of weeks ago I discussed my love for polka dots, so it is no surprise to me that a style icon of mine would be spotted wearing this pattern! This dresses oozes of classic Hollywood glam where it ends at the knees and was fitted all the way through.

Marilyn Monroe

If someone doesn’t recognize this scene it is because they grew up in a cave. This is, hands down, the scene Marilyn Monroe is known best for. In The Seven Year Itch, Marilyn’s famous halter white dress blows up as she walks on top of an air vent. I don’t know how many times I’ve used the expression “I was walking down the street and almost pulled a Marilyn Monroe”, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. This look has been mimicked for Halloween a thousand times over, but what stands out most is that Marilyn shows that a white dress and shoes is a look that stands out and is sophisticated in so many ways (minus the skirt blowing up in the air).

If old Hollywood glamour is a look you would like to mimic, I discovered a brand that oozes of this era. It is called: Stop Staring ttp://www.stopstaringclothing.com/sunshop/. The dresses are beautiful and affordable. I bought a Stop Staring dress from the boutique 1861 http://1861.ca/ (one of my favorite Montreal boutiques) that holds many different brand names. I found this blush dress which I immediately fell in love with. It had the option of a halter strap but I kept it as a strapless, and I added the belt to give a little bling to it. I channelled my inner Monroe that evening. Will you do the same at your next event?
