…On the playground where I spent most of my days.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. When someone hears those words they immediately think of laughter, good times and for the most part, the 90’s. It is one of the best comedic series to date and each and every character has a big part as to why. From Will’s crazy Philly attitude, to Carlton’s dancing (which I don’t want to brag, but I imitate it exceptionally well), to Jeffrey’s cold antics, everyone played a pivotal role in the series. One character in particular was a handful with her signature line “Daddy, can I have $500?”. You guessed correctly: Hilary Banks (played by Karyn Parsons). Hilary was classy, sophisticated and well a tad snobby, but with that she was also always well dressed. One thing she was not known for is her humility as per this photo shows.

However, we loved her nonetheless. The show ended in 1996 and therefore the fashion may be outdated but there are definitely pieces and looks that Hilary sported that we can definitely appreciate in this day and age. Time to take a look at Hilary’s upper class style that caught our attention over the years!

hilary 2

Hilary was a huge fan of hats and matching. This is no exception. Sure this look may be a bit over the top, however, this pattern is very popular even today, and pearls will never go out of style.

HIlary 3

As far as color combinations go, black and white is the most classic of them all. Chanel showed us why, and Hilary is doing a pretty good job at demonstrating how classy it can be. This 2 piece skirt suit is sophisticated and would be fashionable even today.

h8ilary2

Even in the early 90’s Hilary knew the importance of the LBD (Little Black Dress). The sheer sleeves adds unique detailing to the dress which makes it stand out even more. And hey, isn’t that Dr.Huxtable’s son Theo? (Did I mention how much I love 90s television?).

Hilary 4

Would we be seen in this suit today? Nope. But is this color combination of pink and grey just fabulous? Yes. The rare color combination gives off a clean and sweet look with the pink making the color grey more feminine and the grey making the pink more classic.

As the season progressed, Hilary became more beautiful and her style more fashionable. This bold navy dress was a show stopper and caught our attention. Anything cut-out is very popular today and this dress would do well at any classy event.

It wouldn’t be right to write about Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and not give a little lime light to Carlton Banks (played by Alfonso Ribeiro). He was almost everyone’s favorite character and who can blame them. Between his dancing and all of the snoty remarks he would make, Carlton made sure to get quite a few laughs out of us. He also considered himself to be very fashion froward with his polos and khaki pants. He was a perfect fit for any country club because he dressed about 15 years too old for his age. Nonetheless, he was classy and cool (in his own way of course) and we loved every minute of it.

So for those of you who think just because a show is from another time and therefore we cannot allow ourselves to get inspired by, I hope this post made you think differently. One of the amazing characteristics of the fashion scene today is that inspiration from different decades is key. So make sure to inspire yourself from these looks, and update them to make them your own!

In West Philadelphia born and raised…

who family

You know you want to complete that sentence. For the most part, when someone hears that sline, they have the undeniable urge to finish it off with “On the playground where I spent most of my days…”. Or at least I know I do. If you do recognize these lyrics, then you were definitely a fan of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It was THE show of the 90’s and in my opinion, still one of the best comedy series to have aired til this day. You know how sometimes you catch an episode of a show you once found hilarious and you realize “huh…it isn’t that funny”? Well this never happens with Fresh Prince. It is still funny til this day because Will Smith and the whole gang brought us a countless number of timeless jokes.

Since it was a show from the 90’s you can imagine the style is a tad….outdated. However, that does not mean we cannot still admire the flashy and colorful outfits sported by our favorite characters. This post can technically go on forever, however, to narrow it down to a realistic length, I have decided to focus on the two most fashion oriented characters of the series: Will Smith and Miss Hilary Banks. Today Will be the main focus with his colorful and expressive attire.

Will school uniform 3

When Will got to Bel-Air Academy and realized he had to wear a uniform that screamed out boring, he decided to spice things up and turn the school jacket inside out for the lining to appear. Caught the attention of quite a few classmates. He showed us that sometimes even if you are “supposed” to wear something a certain way, doesn’t mean you can’t make it your own.

Will Smith as

One thing Will did not shy away from is colors. Would you be caught dead wearing this on any other day than Halloween in today? Hell no. But at the time, did Will look bad ass sporting this outfit? Hell yes.

Will 1

Will was the definition of goofy (although he hated when his girl Lisa described him as that), but when he dressed up, he was as debonair as they come. He proves why a man looks so sophisticated in a suit.

Will 5

Speaking of men in suits, have you ever seen anyone else wear a cummerbund on their chest? Also Will may have started the look of wearing a blazer with a casual shirt from under. Sure one normally wouldn’t wear a beach tank top under a suit jacket, but no one can disgree that it is different.

will jean jacket

As the years went by, Will’s style matured and became more manly. He often wore a t-shirt under an open long sleeve shirt which is a casual syle many can sport today.

Will 4

Will was no stranger to fluorescent colors and that is definitely one thing that has taken the fashion world by storm in the last few yrs. From tops to pants to nail color, highlighter shades is the way to go and Will’s old school zip up jacket demonstrates why.

Will has had his ups and down, and his style has changed throughout the seasons, but one thing is for sure, he tried to make the best of any situation, but it was proven to be extremely difficult when he was stuck in a basement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kNUDTyEgj4). I wouldn’t normally put hair extensions on the top of my head, but the patterned suspenders are definitely unique.

Stay tuned for Wednesday’s post on Hilary Banks’ very posh and sophisticated style review.

Suit Up. Part 2.

Jessica Pearson from the TV series Suits is one fiesty lawyer. You do not want to get on her bad side, but one thing I would like to do is go to the store where she shops from. She has shown that women can be powerful and successful and most certainly dress the part. She proves that corporate wear does not have to be boring. In fact, every single one of her outfits is better than the next. While keeping her professional attire, she ensures her wardrobe is feminine simultaneously.

Since I am planning a career move, a new wardrobe is a must, and who else to better inspire myself from? I am a firm believer that no matter what clothes you wear you must stay true to yourself. Therefore I will need a closet full of  coporate attire with a little pazazz  Jessica’s classic yet chic looks are going to help guide me to a more professional, put-together wardrobe that is also fun! Let’s continue taking a look through her awesome closet.

A woman should be classy and sophisticated in the workplace, and that is exactly what Jessica Pearson successfully executes with this skirt suit, that has ruffling detailing at the waist area.

Lace is not uncommon in today’s fashion world, however, we don’t see it very often (or should I say often enough) around the office. The reason for that is probably because lace tends to be black, and that usually oozes a bit too much sex appeal. However, in this scene Jessica decided to wear a light grey lace and all of a sudden it is perfectly appropriate for the corporate world!

9-jessicas-magenta-pink-asymmetric-zip-dress

This color is all the rage this season. Anything plum related can be seen on the runways and for all the right reasons: it suits every skin tone and hair color! You can’t go wrong with this rich color for this cooler season, and Jessica shows us why!

jessicas-champagne-blazer

You can’t do corporate without a couple of blazers in your closet. What I love about Jessica’s choices is that they are never your plain blazer. This lightly golden metallic blazer proves that you can be corporate looking and still maintain a little funk.

jessica201-1

This long sleeve grey fitted dress with assymetrical neckline is perfect for the office. It is professional and extremely stylish all at once. Not to mention, classic. Something like this will never go out of style!

jessicas-white-peplum-blazer

My absolute favroite Jessica Pearson blazer. It is edgy wish it’s severe shoulder pads and slight peplum accent at the waist. It can be worn in and out of the office and with pants as well as a dress.

Naturally this would be one of my favorite outfits of the series. Why you ask? Simple: it’s vibrant beautiful color. The office isn’t a place for you to hide away your personality. Don’t shy away from bold colors. If anything, it will grasp the attention of others in only a positive light.

Now that I have analyzed all of Jessica Pearson’s outfits, I am ready for my mini shopping spree of the perfect office wardrobe! Remember only a few key pieces are necessary to maintain a sophisticated and stylish look!

Suit Up.

“Don’t dress for the job you have, but the job you want.” This is a saying that I have heard many times over, and after years of working in the Marketing industry, I find this to be more and more true. I have recently been given the opportunity to change jobs, and alongside many exciting and nervous thoughts rushing through my mind, one thing I know for sure is that I need a new wardrobe! The job I have currently I can get away with a more laid back wardrobe, however, the new company I will be working for is more corporate and I want to make sure I have a wardrobe that shows my professionalism and dedication. I am sure my boyfriend is reading this wide-eyed, frightened of the massive shopping spree I am planning. He needn’t worry though. The great thing about corporate attire is that you just need a few classic invesment pieces that you can mix and match and you’re set!

The show Suits is about lawyers, and as you can imagine, they are extremely well dressed. Jessica Pearson is a talented, big-shot lawyer who dresses the part in every episode. She proves that dressing corporate doesn’t have to be boring. A woman can be successful but look feminine all at once. She proves that woman can make it to the top, and look amazing while doing it. Let’s take a look at Jessica’s fierce outfits throughout the seasons.

I found it only suitable to start off the blog with your “typical” suit. Jessica looks extremely corporate with this 3-piece dark grey suit. However, her necklace definitely adds feminity to the whole look.

Office wear doesn’t only entail wearing suits on a daily basis. It is also very common to wear fitted (but not too fitted) dresses that usually are knee-length. This dress is not just a grey plain dress. The criss cross pattern in the front gives it that extra twist.

Suits - Season 2

A taupe blazer is a wise investment to make simply because it can go with everything. In this scene, Jessica sported an entirely neutral palette look, with a cream top and black skirt, however this blazer can laso have been easilypaired with a fuscia pink shirt with navy pants (just giving an exmaple of many different options).

suits-walkup_510x340

The LBD (Little Black Dress) isn’t only a must-have for a night out, but the right dress is also perfect for the office. It is subtle but forever classic. And don’t even get me started on that beautiful taupe purse. Great color for summer as well as winter.

Suits-Jessica-Pearson black and white

An outfit like this screams out sophistication and power. This houndstooth patterned blazer will definitely catch the eye of everyone in your office. What I love about Jessica’s outfits is that there is always a slight twist to the typical office wear. Instead of sporting the classic buttoned down blouse, she wore a scoop neck grey shirt from under to make it different.

Suits-0007-20120530-209

This is a difficult color to pull off, however, if you can, this blush pink is a great asset to any wardrobe. It is soft and elegant on your skin and rosy cheeks and lips are the perfect balance for that pop of color.

Suits - Season 2

You cannot dress like a corporate business woman and not have an appropriate jacket to match. Jessica’s nicely fitted black coat with gorgeous neckline is professional and beautiful all at once.

Stay tuned for the continuation on Wednesday of how to pull off that sophisticated corpoate look like Jessica Pearson does so flawlessly!
