Polka dots have been around since the dawn of time but as of late we have seen them take a bigger spot (get it?) on and off the small screen. Last post we went over the basic polka dot options and how they can make a relatively simple outfit or a piece of wardrobe more feminine and unique. Now it’s time to take it up a knotch and see how a polka dot is much more than what meets the eye, how it’s elaborate variations are endless!

Pic3-polka dots and patterns

The polka dot with pattern combo: People tend to stick with one pattern at a time, but these women show  that you shouldn’t be scared to combine patterns, because it can result in a pretty awesome outfit! Blair Waldorf (from Gossip Girl), Mindy Kaling (from The Mindy Project) and Tamara (from Awkward) demonstrate that sometimes you should go outside of the box when creating an outfit. Combining patterns can sometimes lead to an overall overwhelming design but these are great examples of how it should be done. Whether it is with stripes, floral, or tweed, adding a polka dot piece to these can often portray a well put together look!

Pic8-different sized polka dots

The different sized polka dots: Who said that when you sport a polka dot pattern you need to stick to just the one size? Hanna Marin (From Pretty Little Liars), Carrie Bradshaw (from The Carrie Diaries), and Polly (from How to Live With Your Parents) demonstrate how choosing a polka dot does not  limit you to the size. They are all sporting outfits that have a number of different sizes which creates a nice pattern within the pattern.

Pic9-feminine polka dots

The Girly Polka Dot: Ruffles and bows have become a common factor in many womens shirts today. It gives off an air of ultra-femininity and sophistication. What would be a “boring” outfit has now taken a nice spin. Emma Pillsbury (from Glee), Megan Calvet (from Mad Men), Annie Edison (from Community) and Paige (from Royal Pains) did just so with either having a bow or ruffles on their shirts and blouses.

Pic7-unique dresses

The funky polka dot: After the polka dot has altered so many simple outfits it was time it got real funky and distorted itself in many different ways. Whether it is with lace, oversized polka dots, or infused with a color block dress, it can look completely different right before your eyes. Santana (from Glee), Belle (from Once Upon a Time) and Annabeth (from Hart of Dixie) are the perfect examples on how you can make the simple pattern get a little crazy.

The polka dot coat: We don’t see a polka dot coat very often and I am not sure why because this is absolutely stunning! Zoe Hart (from Hart of Dixie) is wearing a relatively simple outfit, which wouldn’t normally catch your eye, but with a gold and black polka dot coat, it is hard to miss her! A fun way to dress up an outfit and add a ton of personality.

Now that we have reviewed the interesting different ways one can integrate polka dots into their wardrobe, I hope to be seeing more in yours! And whenever you’re in doubt, just ask yourself “Can a little polka dot do me any harm?” and the answer is no! Polka dot away!

What did Princess Diana and the Duchess Kate Middleton have in common on the day they brought out their first born son (other than looking ravishing)? If you said polka dots, then you guessed correctly! Both opted for a sweet refreshed new-mommy look and chose to wear polka dot dresses.

Polka dots have been around in the fashion world for a very long time, however as of late we’ve seen them fill out wardrobes of the rich and famous, as well as us regular folk’s. TV show characters are no exception to this and progressively the polka dot look has taken different forms and variations.

You may think that polka dots are pretty basic and you wouldn’t be wrong, but they have evolved greatly over the years and can be simple or funky all at once. They make a regular outfit take a different spin on something you’ve seen 1000 times over. It’s time to review how one can integrate an array of polka dot oufits into a wardrobe but still have them look very different from one another. Let the evolution of the polka dot begin!

Pic5-basic polka dot dress

The basic polka dot dress:  Alex Kerkovich (from Happy Endings) and Mindy Kaling (from The Mindy Project) are both sporting what is perceived to be relatively common in many women’s wardrobe today: a simple, short polka dot dress. The style of the dress can vary greatly but the basic purpose is to take what looks like a regular dress, and make it slightly more feminine by adding polka dots.

Pic4-polka dot skirts

The basic polka dot skirt:  Karen Cartwright (from Smash) and Jessica Day (from New Girl) chose to wear basic tops with cute polka dot skirts. This adds a bit more personality into a look. Jessica Day’s skirt (to the right) is one of my favorites. I love when a skirt sinches at the waist look and bubbles out. It adds even more femininity to the outfit (and any combination with navy is great in my books).

Pic6-basic polka dot shirt

The basic polka dot blouse:  Zoe Hart (from Hart of Dixie) and Leslie Knope (from Parks and Recreation) are wearing what seems to be a relatively simple outfit but both decided to take their regular blouse and add the playful pattern to it. Makes what would have been a more serious look, a bit more fun. Zoe Hart’s blouse (on the left) has an even more special spin to it: some of her polka dots are floral looking, which adds some color with the navy and breaks the identical polka dot pattern.

Pic2-polka dot scarves

The polka dot scarf: Who said scarves need to be boring? Adding a dotted scarf like Aria Marie Montgomery (from Pretty Little Liars) and Mindy did gives a whole new meaning to what a scarf represents. What once was something to keep you warm, now has become an accessory. Both girls took 2 very different approaches: Aria already wearing a busy outfit (plaid and stripes) added the polka dot scarf to create a medley of patterns, whereas Mindy wearing a beautiful yellow jacket added the green colorful polka dot scarf to add a pattern, and blend in the color of the jacket in with the scarf.

Pic 1-jess in bikinis

The polka dot bikini: As the song goes, Jessica Day decided to also wear a polka dot bikini in 2 different episodes of New Girl. Both adorable, both flattering. There’s something about a polka dot bikini that screams out old Hollywood. The cuts naturally gravitate to that era and they look extremely dainty.

As you’ve seen the polka dot can transform the simplest of outfits and accessories without looking over the top. Stay tuned for Wednesday’s post on the more elaborate adaptations of the polka dots and looks!

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Part 2.

Bridesmaids annie and helen

The hilariously funny movie “Bridesmaids” had it all: laughs, love, fights, sports, friendships and last but not least, fashion. Annie (played by Kristen Wiig) and her arch nemesis Helen (played by Rose Byrne) both had very different styles but both women left an impression on me. On Monday we reviewed Annie’s simple and modest feminine style that didn’t break her wallet. Today it is time for Helen to step up to the plate with her expensive looking, haute couture wardrobe, which matched her glamourous, high society, fashionista personality. Who will be crowned bridesmaid of the ball? Let’s find out!

Film Title: Bridesmaids

When we caught a first glimpse of Helen in this breathtaking black gown I know we all felt as jealous as Annie did. The lovely beaded sheer detailing on the upper body of this gown is quite impressive. She wore this for her friends engagement party which some would say is way over the top, but for Helen, it is right up her ally, making sure all eyes are on her. I always thought that this dress in white would make a lovely wedding dress as well.

This lovely cream dress with unique short sleeves is one of my dream outfits. She kept everything in neutral tones, including her long beaded necklace and stood out from the rest of the women for this day of bridesmaids dress shopping.

As opposed to Annie, when travelling Helen had one thing in mind and that’s to look nothing but her best. Comfort wasn’t a priority for her since she wore this metallic light blue skirt and top with a gold jacket and heels when flying to Vegas. Who needs comfort when you look this good?

Film Title: Bridesmaids

This scene was actually cut from the movie but it’s one of my favorite Helen outfits. A very old Hollywood look with the white big sunglasses and this beautiful beige jacket. This look keeps up with Helen’s neutral tone wardrobe which is fitting to her personlity since she always liked to keep things polished.

Choosing my favorite bridesmaid wasn’t an easy task! They both had a great sense of style and chose outfits that matched their personalities. Helen, the conservative classy woman chose to spend extra money on her wardrobe, selecting stand out pieces with neutral palettes and clean lines. Annie on the other hand went for the cuter approach with sweet summer dresses and colorful blazers. Her lean legs allowed her to wear shorter dresses and showed that she had a very fun personlity!

The ideal wardrobe would be to combine the two together! You can have cute and feminene one day and sophisticated and womanly the next. However, if I HAD to choose, the winner would be: Megan (played by Melissa Mccarthy). That’s right-I chose the most ill-dressed character of the movie. Why you ask? It’s simple: Megan may have been the worst dressed out of all the bridesmaids but not only was she my favorite character but she also showed that no matter what you wear or what you do, you can always be a confident lady. She demonstrated that by always sporting her pearls, having her nails done and having the fiercest confidance every woman should. Thank you Megan for the great laughs and showing us that a little pazazz never hurt anyone! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eTaP3vBUqg

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.

There’s nothing like a good comedy. One that’s gut wrenchingly, laugh-out-loud funny. Unfortunately they are a dime a dozen, for many movies have tried, and failed. However, Bridesmaids was as much of a success as I had hoped it would be. Hilariously funny, witty and just so real. Not to mention, written by women with a complete women cast, I feel pretty darn proud.

This simple yet great story line is about how Annie Walker (played by Kristen Wiig) goes about dealing with the harsh realities of her life (losing her boyfriend, losing her job, having unbearable roomates, etc), and the fact that her best friend Lillian (played by Maya Rudolph) is getting married. Her life is in shambles but she strives to be the best maid-of-honor she can be (and having a lot of difficulty along the way doing so). Not to mention, Lillian has all of a sudden found herself a little-miss-perfect friend in the beautiful and posh, Helen (played by Rose Byrne) and Annie is not too pleased.

Obviously this being a 99.0% female cast, chances of seeing some nice clothes is bound to happen. Having 6 women in the bridal party leads to 6 very different styles. Since Annie and Helen were so competitive in the movie, I thought a little fashion competition between the two would be appropriate. Today I will take the time to review Annie’s cute and simple wardrobe that shows you don’t need to break your wallet to look great.

If you watched this movie you definitely noticed a pattern in Annie’s wardrobe: dress and blazer. In at least 3 different scenes of this movie, she chooses to wear this combination and the outcome is sweet and feminine. A cute summer dress is always a great choice (and can be found for a very good price) whether it’s for a supper or a day time get together. Adding a blazer with rolled up sleeves gives it an edgier look which adds sophistication (perfect for more formal events).

When it comes to travelling I put comfort first and wear my most comfortable sweats and shirt. This seems like a good idea until I arrive at my destination and don’t feel even remotely glamourous stepping off the plane. While still keeping comfort in mind, Annie Walker opted for jeans and a black and white nice loose striped top. The look is casual and practical, yet she looks put together and presentable (except for when she got drunk and made the plane take an emergency landing).

Annie worked shortly at a jewerly store and she was by far the worst salesperson you can have. One thing she did succeed at is her work attire. A v-neck thin sweater paired with a matching shirt is a great way to maintain the professional look without sporting a suit.

annie red dress

Despite Annie being miserable at her friend’s bridal shower, she still looked fantastic in a short red dress with a red matching leather belt. Simple and appropriate for an event like this, and differentiated itself with the 2 different sized straps. Her meltdown caused quite the scene, but at least she looked good while destroying that heart shaped cookie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8_5uPfGXjA

Do you like Annie’s style in Bridesmaids? Stay tuned on Wednesday for the style review of Helen. Will she beat out Annie with her expensive wardrobe? We will soon find out!

Here Comes the Bride. Part 2.

Ah summertime. BBQ’s, swimming, terrasses, and you guessed right, weddings! Yes, tis the season and I am sure I am not alone in having to attend more than one. Weddings for me mean I get to dress up, dance and eat a ridiculous amount of food. The main thing I look forward to however is finally getting to see what look the bride decided to go for. From the hair, to makeup and dress, every decision greatly affects your overall look and what kind of bride you want to be.

We have often witnessed our favorite characters getting hitched on television and more often than not it is a very joyous occasion. On Monday I went over some of my favorite TV show looks and here are some other looks and moments I have adored from the past and present.

This was simply some foreshadowing, but seeing Robin Scherbatsky from How I Met Your Mother in her beautiful mermaid wedding gown was such a delight. From the crystal belt to the sheer neckline and sleeves, this bridal look oozes old Hollywood with a modern twist.

When Phoebe Buffay from Friends tied the knot with the adorable Mike (who was one of my favorite significant others of any TV show) her look was not at all suprising. Considering how funky and different her style was on a daily basis, her going the untraditional route with the non-white dress was expected. She stayed true to herself and looked beautiful with her deep ivory corset gown and multicolored wild-floral bouquet.

charlotte wedding

Second time’s a charm. Or at least that was the case for Charlette York-Goldenblatt from Sex and the City when she married the love of her life, Harry Goldenblatt. She converted to Judaism to be with the man she loved and her wedding look the second time around was absolutely breathtaking. This feminine, very defined gown with a fine criss-cross chest detailing left us all in awe. Her crisp white vail and romantic curls with red lips allowed for a classic look and even though the ceremony didn’t go exactly as planned, they lived a very happily ever after!

Mr. and Mrs. Chanandler Bong finally tied the knot, and what a glorious day it was! When Monica Gellar and Chandler Bing got married on Friends, fans couldn’t be happier (besides, it was refreshing to see someone else other than Ross say “I do” for a change). Monica’s low v, fitted, satin gown was perfect for her relatively simple style, and her down-to-the-floor length vail was just enough to add a little something to the basic yet beautiful gown. The deep red bouquet keeps up with the classic essence of her bridal look.

If anyone was going to pull off the different bridal look it would be Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen from Gossip Girl. Always trying to set themselves apart in the fashion world, their wedding day would be no exception. This being Blair’s second wedding she wanted to go for a light baby blue beaded gown with a beautiful train, and maintained her princess tiara (as per her first wedding). On the other hand, Serena who was always known to be a bit excentric, opted for an as gold-as-you-can-get strapless ball gown. They may not look like your typical brides but their personalities shone through and looked stunning nonetheless.

Last but definitely not least: Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence from Boy Meets World. One of the most adorable couples that took over our childhood because we literally watched they grow and fall in love together. This being the 90’s, obviously Topanga’s dress is slightly outdated, however long sleeve gowns are making a comeback (i.e. The Duchess, Kate Middleton). It is an understated look that can go a long way, and I dont doubt we will be seeing more of it!

No matter what style and look you opt for on your big day, remember to have your own personal taste make an appearance. And when looking for a dress keep in mind of one thing: you won’t know how it will look on you, until you try it! You could be very pleasantly surprised!

Here Comes the Bride.

When I think of summer, 3 things come to mind: swimming, bbqs and wedding season. Unfortunately with the very unpredictable Montreal weather, it is hard to plan the first two, however, it is always a sure thing that I will have at least one to two weddings to attend a summer (no matter how the weather turns out). From the finger foods, to the crazy dancing, I always have a good time but what I look forward to the most is finally getting a glimpse of the bride’s wedding dress.

Whether they opt for a princess gown, or a romantic lace dress, each bride is beautiful in their own way. Having done the makeup of many brides on their special day, I know how important it is for them to look their most beautiful, but to also still feel like themselves. Whatever style you go for, you have to stay true to yourself and if possible have your personality shine through your dress selection.

All these weddings I am attending make me think of some of my favorite wedding looks and moments from TV shows. I wanted to take a look and revisit some of my all-time favorite brides from the past and present! Some of these looks may be a bit outdated for 2013, but one thing noone can disagree with is that when we saw these characters in their wedding dresses, tears of joy filled our eyes.

It had been a long time coming for Izzie Stevens and Alex Karev’s to tie the knot from Grey’s Anatomy. When the day came Izzie’s look did not dissapoint with her ivory lace drop waist wedding gown with a halter neck.

Who could forget Luke and Lorelei‘s from Gilmore Girls special day? Lorelei looked stunning in this very soft pink strapless gown with a champagne sash at the waist. The floral detailing makes the dress very unique and I must admit, I’m a tad biased towards this dress because the one thing I know for sure is that my own dress will also be a very soft pink.

It looked like Charlotte York from Sex and the City had it all when she was going to marry her Trey McDougal but unfortunately, the marriage didn’t last very long. Fortunately for Charlotte she looked breathtaking in her gown. As her wedding planner Anthony Marantino said “You want pasta you go to Little Italy, you want wedding, you go Wang”. He couldn’t have said it better! Vera Wang is known for making unforgettable wedding dresses and this was no exception.

Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl sure doesn’t look too happy in this picture. It’s probably because she didn’t want to go through with the wedding to her Prince, but one thing is for sure, it is not the stunning gowns fault. Another look successfully orchestrated with the help of the undefeated Vera Wang. Blaire looked like a true princess with the touch of the tiara inspired jewels on her head.

A true classic: Rebecca Donaldson and Uncle Jesse’s big day. Full House had a strong presence in most of our households growing up and this episode definitely brought tears of joy to our eyes! Becky’s typical 90’s dress had enough ruffles to could go on for days, but she looked stunning (and let’s just point out how scrumptious Uncle Jesse looks in that tux. As he would say “Have Mercy!”)

Last but not least, my tribute to Glee. I am a very big fan of the show and music and the news about Cory Monteith (who played Finn Hudson) is truly devastating. This is in honor to him for he will always be remembered and will be deeply missed. This ultra feminime Audrey Hepburn-inspired gown was perfect for Rachel Berry when she was ready to tie-the-knot with Finn. It’s simplicity is what makes it stand out and I love the choice of white flowers for this exceptionally white dress. Audrey Hepburn would have been proud of Rachel’s elegance.

Stay tuned for Wednesday’s post on another 6 of my favorite bridal TV moments. If you have any favorite bridal looks, I would love to hear them! 🙂

This Means Fashion.

I can name 3 good reasons why you should watch This Means War: Tom Hardy, Chris Pine and fashion. If the men weren’t eye candy enough, Lauren (played by Reeese Witherspoon) has one amazing sense of style and each outfit is as appealing to the eye as are Chris Pine’s baby blues.

Lauren is a professional woman and she makes sure to dress like it. This brown tie dress and burgundy purse is an interesting combination that I normally wouldn’t have thought of, but it works! Combining colors in the same palette is a great way to match without using complimentary colors.

You all know how I feel about a good red dress. It pops and is perfect for day time as well as night. This fitted t-shirt style dress is great for a date when you don’t want to seem too overdressed. Zippers always add a casual funky aspect to a piece (but you want to make sure to not overdo them either).

My favorite look of the entire movie: this white lace dress, with a navy blazer and nude pumps. Navy and nude is probably my favorite color combination of all time and the white lace adds a feminine, sophisticated touch. This look is appropriate for a date, or even a bigger event like a christening or engagement party.

I love how she can have such different looks in this movie. From cute and sweet to ultra sexy, this look definitely fits in the latter categorie. A short leather black skirt with a sheer black top demonstrates confidence and is a sure fire bet to impress your date. Also, you can never go wrong with the classic black Christian Louboutin shoes (with a slingback twist)!

Lauren demonstrates here that brown and black do in fact go well together. A simple black tank and black pants with a dark brown biker jacket makes her look like a CIA agent herself. Opting for a brown jacket instead of the typical black breaks down the color scheme without making anything stand out too much.

No doubt about it Lauren covered all bases of fashion from cute and feminine to sexy and sultry. She demonstrated that bold colors and simple cuts with no patterns can still make a strong statement. She clearly had taste when it came to clothes, and men! And I won’t be spoiling as to who she chooses at the end of the movie, that’s something you’ll have to find out for yourself!
